Background:
A client managing shared-use computers in public environments (airports, libraries, and recycled PCs) needed a reliable solution to securely erase user data after each session. The primary concern was preventing unauthorized access to sensitive information left behind by previous users, ensuring data privacy and security in high-traffic areas.
Solution:
We implemented a secure data cleanup system to erase downloaded files and clear free space on the drives, ensuring no recoverable traces of data. The system also included the Annihilator: a Linux boot CD that performs a comprehensive cleanup by booting the system outside the operating system, ensuring files that might be locked or in use are securely deleted. This setup ensured that every computer was thoroughly cleaned and ready for the next user, with no risk of personal data being left behind.
Outcome:
The system provided an efficient, automated solution for maintaining data privacy and security on shared-use computers. It ensured that all residual data was securely erased, reducing the risk of unauthorized data recovery and improving the trust of users in these public access machines. The client could now confidently recycle PCs and manage shared computers with minimal risk of data breaches.
