Redundancy Manager Software

Redundancy Manager Software

Overview:

A power utility company faced challenges in ensuring uninterrupted SCADA system operations in its IEC 61850-based Substation Automation System (SAS). The primary concern was system failures due to network issues, power outages, or application crashes, which could lead to operational downtime and data loss. To enhance reliability, the company needed an automated redundancy solution.

Solution:

Azure’s Redundancy Manager (RM) was deployed to support a dual-server redundancy architecture with seamless failover between the primary and secondary servers. RM continuously monitors system health and, upon detecting a failure, automatically switches control to the standby server. Key features included:

  • Application State Monitoring: Ensures system resumes in the last active state after failure.
  • Client Re-Routing: Redirects client requests to the backup server in real time.
  • Database Synchronization & Restore: Maintains data consistency across servers.
  • Network & System Failure Detection: Identifies issues proactively.

Outcome:

The implementation of Azure Redundancy Manager resulted in a highly resilient SCADA system, minimizing downtime, ensuring real-time failover, and improving operational continuity in substation management. The solution also enhanced efficiency and data security, ensuring power grid stability.
